Our role in the Akvamarin project and the use of green hydrogen

One of our strategic clients, Hungarian Gas Storage Ltd. (MFG) launched a couple of years ago a green energy project called Akvamarin. The project also concerns the SMCS system (Storage Management and Commercial System), the IT system that controls the day-to-day operation of the four underground storage facilities, which has been developed by Astron for 10 years.

Our client, MFGT, has installed an electrolyser system with a total capacity of approximately 2.5 MW and the associated hydrogen gas preparation technology at the Kardoskút underground gas storage facility. Using surplus energy produced by renewable energy sources, hydrogen is produced through water splitting. The hydrogen produced in this way, mixed with natural gas, is used in the Hungarian Gas Storage Ltd.’s own gas-operated equipment. In strict compliance with gas quality standards, it will also be delivered to final consumers via the transmission system.

In the SMCS system, Astron’s team have created separate measurement points to measure the quantity, the movement and quality of the hydrogen stored separately or mixed with natural gas in the underground storage facilities. We are excited to be part of such an innovative project!
